SDG CODE: Section E1, Subsection Education System - Infant Education
The aim of this page is to provide information on infant education in Castilla y León, as well as on all related aspects.
Pre-school education is an educational stage with its own identity which caters for children from birth to six years of age. It is voluntary and its purpose is to contribute to the physical, affective, social, cognitive and artistic development of boys and girls, as well as to education in civic values for coexistence.
It is organised in two cycles:
- The first comprises up to 3 years of age.
- The second, from 3 to 6 years of age.
Pre-school education will contribute to the development of children's capacities that will enable them:
- To know their own and other people's bodies, their possibilities of action and to learn to respect differences.
- Observe and explore their family, natural and social environment.
- Progressively acquire autonomy in their usual activities.
- Develop their affective capacities.
- To relate to others on an equal footing and to progressively acquire elementary guidelines for coexistence and social relations, as well as to practice the use of empathy and peaceful conflict resolution, avoiding any type of violence.
- Develop communication skills in different languages and forms of expression.
- To be initiated in logical-mathematical skills, in reading and writing, and in movement, gesture and rhythm.
- Promote, apply and develop the social norms that promote gender equality.
In both cycles of infant education, attention will be paid progressively to affective development, emotional management, movement and body control habits, the manifestations of communication and language, the elementary guidelines for coexistence and social relations, as well as the discovery of the environment, the living beings that coexist in it and the physical and social characteristics of the environment in which they live. Education in values, education for responsible and sustainable consumption and health promotion and education will also be included. Furthermore, it will help girls and boys to develop a positive, balanced and egalitarian self-image and to acquire personal autonomy.
The development of all languages and modes of perception specific to these ages will be encouraged in order to develop their full potential, respecting the specific culture of childhood as defined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the General Comments of the Committee on the Rights of the Child. To this end, and without this being a requirement for primary education, they may encourage a first approach to reading and writing, as well as early initiation experiences in basic numerical skills, in information and communication technologies and in visual and musical expression, and in any others that the autonomous education administrations may determine. A first approach to foreign language learning will also be encouraged in the second cycle of pre-primary education, especially in the final year.
The general regulation of this educational stage can be found in Organic Law 2/2006 of 3 May on Education.
