Description:

UPDATE DATE: 2025/05/26

SDG CODE: Section E1, Subsection Education system - Primary education

This page aims to provide information about primary education in Castilla y León, as well as all related aspects.

The primary education stage is especially important because it marks the beginning of compulsory schooling and lays the foundations on which all subsequent learning is based. It is free of charge.

The aim of this stage is to help pupils learn oral expression and comprehension, reading, writing, arithmetic, the acquisition of basic notions of culture and the habit of living together, as well as study and work, artistic sense, creativity and affectivity. All of this with the aim of guaranteeing a comprehensive education that contributes to the full development of pupils' personalities and prepares them to successfully complete compulsory secondary education.

Primary education will contribute to the development of children's capacities that will enable them:

  1. Know and appreciate the values and rules of coexistence, learn to act in accordance with them in an empathetic way, prepare for the active exercise of citizenship and respect human rights, as well as the pluralism of a democratic society.
  2. To develop habits of individual and team work, effort and responsibility in study, as well as attitudes of self-confidence, critical sense, personal initiative, curiosity, interest and creativity in learning, and entrepreneurial spirit.
  3. To acquire skills for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the prevention of violence, which will enable them to develop autonomously in the school and family environment, as well as in the social groups with which they interact.
  4. To know, understand and respect different cultures and the differences between people, equal rights and opportunities for men and women and non-discrimination of people on the grounds of ethnicity, sexual orientation or identity, religion or beliefs, disability or other conditions.
  5. Know and use appropriately the Spanish language and, if any, the co-official language of the Autonomous Community and develop reading habits.
  6. Acquire in at least one foreign language the basic communicative competence to enable them to express and understand simple messages and to cope in everyday situations.
  7. Develop basic mathematical skills and be initiated in the resolution of problems that require the performance of elementary operations of calculation, geometric knowledge and estimation, as well as being able to apply them to situations of everyday life.
  8. To know the fundamental aspects of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Geography, History and Culture.
  9. Develop basic technological competences and initiate in their use, for learning purposes, developing a critical spirit towards their functioning and the messages they receive and elaborate.
  10. Use different artistic representations and expressions and initiate in the construction of visual and audiovisual proposals.
  11. Value hygiene and health, accept one's own body and that of others, respect differences and use physical education, sport and food as means to favour personal and social development.
  12. Know and value the animals closest to human beings and adopt ways of behaving that favour empathy and care for them.
  13. Develop their affective capacities in all areas of their personality and in their relationships with others, as well as an attitude against violence, prejudices of any kind, and the use of violence against animals.
  14. To develop healthy daily habits of active autonomous mobility, promoting road safety education and respectful attitudes that have an impact on the prevention of traffic accidents.

The stage comprises six academic years which will be taken ordinarily between 6 and 12 years of age. It comprises three cycles of two academic years and is organised into areas, which will have a global and integrating character, oriented towards the development of pupils' competences and may be organised into domains.

Guidance and tutorial action will accompany the individual and collective educational process of the pupils and will encourage mutual respect and cooperation between equals, with special attention to gender equality.

At this stage, special emphasis will be placed on guaranteeing educational inclusion, on personalised attention to students and their learning, participation and coexistence needs, on the prevention of learning difficulties and on the implementation of reinforcement mechanisms, flexibility, methodological alternatives or other appropriate measures as soon as any of these situations are detected.

The assessment of pupils will be continuous and global and will take into account their progress in the learning processes as a whole.

The general regulation of this educational stage can be found in Organic Law 2/2006 of 3 May on Education. The implementation timetable established in the Fifth Final Provision of Organic Law 2/2020, of 29 December, should be taken into account for this purpose.
